INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION “FASSA BORTOLO DOMUS RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION” IX Edition – 2023 competition notice

 

Art. 1 - INSTITUTION OF THE PRIZE

The International Prize for Architectural Restoration “Fassa Bortolo Domus Restoration and Preservation”, conceived and promoted in 2010 by Fassa S.r.l., owner of the “Fassa Bortolo” brand, and by the Ferrara University Department of Architecture to celebrate its twentieth anniversary, was established for the purpose of rewarding and promoting to the public at large architectural restoration works that have managed to best interpret the preservation principles shared by the scientific community, including through the use of contemporary forms of expression.

 

Art. 2 – THE PRIZE

Due to the required specific business skills in this area, the Prize is aimed at identifying not only the designers but also the contractor companies that have carried out the restoration work. The prize is held annually and is divided into two sections alternated every 2 years as follows:

• entries submitted as “Built projects”: designers from both the private or public sector and the restoration companies that completed the works will be awarded Gold and Silver medals;

• entries submitted as “Undergraduate, Graduate, Master, PhD and Graduate School Theses”: Gold and Silver medals will be appointed to Undergraduate, Graduate, Master, PhD and Graduate School Theses considered by the jury to be award-worthy for specific aspects.

In this 2023 Nineth competition the competing category will be “Built Projects”.  The total prize money for this 2023 competition is 10,000.00 euro, divided as follows:

• a prize of Euros 5.000,00 (and a gold medal) to the designer or the design team awarded as winners of the Prize “Fassa Bortolo Domus Restoration and Preservation”;

• two awards of Euros 2.500,00 each (and silver medals) to the runners-up.

Moreover, the Jury could decide to identify additional entries worthy of “Special Mentions” and consequently award the Prizes in a different way. The Jury also has the option of setting up a Shortlist of the Prize to highlight those deserving projects which have not been included in the pool of the prize-winning and mentioned candidates.

 

Art. 3 - THE FASSA BORTOLO SPECIAL PRIZE

From the Fifth Edition, the new Special Prize Fassa Bortolo has been introduced to award those following the principles of conservation of heritage, of sustainability and of high quality architecture who have used solutions from the Fassa Bortolo Integrated System or main related Systems properly. It is possible to submit the project to the Special Prize sending the required documentation (see Art. 6 item h), in order to access the list of selected projects. The prize money for the winning project is € 3.000,00.

 

Art. 4 - TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR ENTRIES

For the 2023 competition, the entries for the Prize in the “Built Projects” division may be submitted by individual professionals or temporary grouping, by architectural-engineering firms and by the contractor companies that completed the restoration work. Each individual candidate, contractor company or group may only submit one entry to take part to the competition. The work must have been completed within 10 years from the publication date of this competition notice.

 

Art. 5 – ENTRY PROCEDURE

Entries for the Prize can be submitted by completing the special electronic form at the website www.premiorestauro.it before the deadline on December 6th, 2023. UPDATED DEADLINE DECEMBER 20th, 2023

 

Art. 6 - REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

To be eligible for selection by the Jury, entries must be accompanied by the following 3 typologies of documents:

  • 2 A1 panels (portrait) saved as *.pdf e *.jpg at 300 dpi di resolution (see the template on the award website); including the information stated as follow and materials;
  • 1 100x70 cm panel  (landscape) saved as *.pdf e *.jpg at 300 dpi di resolution (see the template on the award website) where the candidates have to place the 2 A1 panels adapting them to the format;
  • all the materials used to compose the 2 A1 panels (organized into electronic folders)

The candidates of the “Built Projects” division must submit the following materials divided in folders with alphanumeric name (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i):

 

a) a short curriculum of the designer/s (maximum 2.000 characters of text, including spaces, in Italian or English), indicating the design studio address and attaching a photo of the candidate or the design team (JPEG 300 dpi, 5 cm minimum short side);

b) name of them main contractor involved in the completion of the works and a portfolio is optional, in Italian or English (the portfolio must not be included in the panels);

c) a data sheet identifying the completed project (building name – if any – place, customer, ownership of the work, partners involved, timeline of the work);

d) summary report illustrating the approach of the restoration project and the results obtained (maximum 2,000 characters of text, spaces included, in Italian or English);

e) a general and technical-descriptive report about the project and work (maximum 15.000 characters of text, including spaces, in Italian or English), with special focus on the principles at the base of the project and the description of the methods chosen for the work (this report must not be included in the panels);

f) drawings of the project before and after the restoration work (floor plans, perspective and section views, sketches, conceptual diagrams, photos of the models, renderings, etc.);

g) a minimum of 12 significant photographs in high quality (300 dpi, 15 cm minimum short side): minimum 3 of the projects before the work; minimum 3 after the restoration work; 3 of the most significant restoration stages.

h) only for those who are participating also at Special Prize Fassa Bortolo: declaration signed by the architect/responsible of the works, certifying the use of the Fassa Bortolo Integrated Systems (Plasterboard, Application Systems, Plasters and Rehabilitation Works, Color System, Coatings etc. see www.fassabortolo.com), mentioning the company that applied the system on construction site and related photographic documentation. It will be necessary to add minimum 3 photos of technical details (300 dpi, 15 cm minimum short side) and minimum 3 significant photos of the construction site (300 dpi, 15 cm minimum short side).

i) - two A1 (portrait) panels with Italian or English texts, assembled by using the materials reported in folders a), b), c), d), f), g). The two panels layout will have to be sent in both *.pdf and *.jpeg format, 300dpi resolution, quality 12, RGB using the template available for download on the homepage of the website.

- One 100x70 cm panel (landscape) saved as *.pdf e *.jpg at 300 dpi di resolution (see the template on the award website) where the candidates have to place the 2 A1 panels adapting them to the format;

 

All of the documents described in points a), b), c), d), f), g) of this present article referring to the “Built projects” section must be placed into 2 vertical A1 size panels (folder i).

The Jury decision will be mainly based on the evaluation of these panels.

 

Art. 7 - SUBMISSION OF ENTRY DOCUMENTS

To avoid both the environmental load due to packaging and transport of the entry documents and any inconvenience at customs (for extra EU countries and Switzerland), which have often led to high freights, all the required documents as set in Art. 6 must be sent in digital format through e-mail before December 20th, 2023 UPDATED DEADLINE JANUARY 04th, 2024. All the entry documents must be sent (using file-delivery systems) to the e-address: premiorestauro@unife.it.

Failure to meet this deadline for submission of the documents, failure to meet the entry requirements or failure to comply with the instructions specified in Art. 6 of this competition notice in regards to the contents will lead to the entry being rejected by the Jury. Payment of a registration fee is required for participation in the Prize in order to cover the technical costs borne by the Prize organizer in managing files and printing their contents on high resolution photographic paper assembled on rigid boards for evaluation by the jury and subsequent exhibition. The entrance fee amount to €120,00, which must be paid no later than December 20th, 2023,UPDATED DEADLINE JANUARY 04th, 2024,  in the way that will be indicated by email after registration. Art. 8 – THE JURY

The Jury’s decision will be final and not subject to appeal. The Jury appointed in 2022 by the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara oversees the evaluation process for the two-year period of the specific edition, having been called to express itself for both the “Undergraduate, Graduate, Master, PhD and Graduate School Theses” division in 2022 and for the “Built Projects” division related to the present competition in 2023.

 

Art. 9 - NOTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS

The outcomes of the selection with the identification of the winners and the assignment of Honorable mentions during the nineth edition, year 2023, will be communicated to all participants by March 2024; the award proceedings and the reasons for the award and the honorable mentions will also be published by means of the official Award website (www.premiorestauro.it) and Fassa S.r.l. website (www.fassabortolo.com), as well as in the specialized press. The promoters of the Award also undertake to enhance the results of the Award and to disseminate the projects selected and presented with the widest spectrum of conference and editorial initiatives to confirm the importance of debate and the comparison of ideas and methodologies.

 

Art. 10 - PUBLICATION OF THE WINNING WORKS

The prize-winning projects along with those deemed worthy of mention will be published in a booklet dedicated to this edition of the Award; the descriptions and drawings accompanying them, together with the projects in the prospective shortlist, will also be available to see on the Award website.

 

Art. 11 – AWARD SUBSCRIPTION

By sending the documents required for admission in the competition, entrants in the Prize: - declare under their responsibility that they are the exclusive copyright holders of the submitted projects; - accept and abide by all the rules specified in this announcement; - consent the non-return of any material submitted; - authorize the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and Fassa S.r.l., promoters of the Prize, to use and publish the contents listed at Art. 6 (preceding the panels, list of the materials used, including the contents required by letter a) to h) describing the submitted project) in part or in full, in hard or soft copy, for any purposes even not related to the Prize, including for advertising purposes, citing the source, without making any claims in relation to copyright; It is expressly understood that there is no compensation for this authorization and therefore the participants will have nothing to claim in any way, including copyrights, as well as for the uses that the University of Ferrara and/or Fassa S.r.l. can do with the above documentation; shall indemnify the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and Fassa S.r.l. against any claims, disputes or judgments relating to the contents of the works and the projects presented used and published as specified in the previous point. The organizers of the Prize reserve the right to make any changes they deem necessary to ensure the best outcome, as well as to request additions to the material received.
